Professor Mark Francis of the University of California at Davis will visit the UO on May 1-2 to discuss his ongoing work on case study methodology with students as a part of this term's Landscape Research Colloquium. Professor Francis' work is widely known, and has received numerous awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, and the Environmental Design Research Association.
Professor Francis will be giving two separate public presentations while visiting, and will also be meeting with a number of students to discuss their research. These presentations will be:
Tuesday evening, May 1 at 6 pm in 231 "Open Public Urban Spaces: The Case for 'Mixed Life' "
Wednesday, May 2, at noon in 231 "A Case Study Method for Landscape Architecture"
Among the work Mark is best known for is his early work on Community Gardens and Open Space, and the book "Public Space", which was co-authored by Stephen Carr, Leanne Rivlin, and Andrew Stone. More recently, Mark was the lead investigator on a project sponsored by the Landscape Architecture Foundation to create a "Case Study Methodology" that has since been published and utilized by professionals, academicians, and students in the creation and extension of the discipline's body of knowledge related to the creation and life of projects and the understanding of issues/topics related to the practice of environmental design. He has personally authored two extensive case studies, one a place-based study of Village Homes in Davis, CA, and another an issue-based study of User Needs in Public Space.
Both of these presentations are associated with the Landscape Architecture Research Colloquium, and are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Department of Landscape Architecture at 346-3619.
