Applying to the Department of Landscape Architecture

Undergraduate Applicants

The Department admits undergraduate students as first year students, second year transfers, or advanced transfers. If you are already a student at the University of Oregon, please proceed to Part Two of the application process. If you are not yet a University of Oregon student, please read Part One for details of how to apply to the University of Oregon. There are two parts to the undergraduate admissions process as you will read below.

Part One:

Apply for admission to the University of Oregon by January 15, indicating Landscape Architecture as your desired major. First year students (freshmen) and Transfer students interested in the bachelor of landscape architecture (BLA) program must apply to the University of Oregon by January 15. Please follow the UO Admissions Office application instructions at: Applying to the University of Oregon.

Part Two:

Complete the Department of Landscape Architecture Online Application (click HERE for the required application) and submit all other required materials listed below to the Department of Landscape Architecture. ALL materials must be postmarked by January 15. These materials (other than the online application) should be mailed; directly to the following address:

Department of Landscape Architecture
Attn: Undergraduate Application Committee
5234 University of Oregon
Eugene, OR 97403-5234

A personal letter indicating why you want to study Landscape Architecture and particularly why you want to study at the University of Oregon. In this letter, please tell us as much about yourself as possible - your background, your interests and aspirations in the field of landscape architecture, and anything else which you believe will aid us in making an intelligent decision regarding your admission.

A portfolio of your creative work. (Formatted in an 8 1/2 x 11 notebook - electronic portfolios or works on CDs are not accepted). The examples of your work should indicate your creativity. Please include those graphic and written materials which will help us evaluate your potential to succeed and flourish within our school. You may include copies of photographs, drawings, a story, an article, poetry, projects of any kind, or a combination of all of these. Put your work together as thoughtfully as possible. An 8 1/2 x 11 notebook works very well for displaying your work. If you wish the return of your portfolio, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return mailing. Application materials should NOT BE INCLUDED in your portfolio. Please, make sure your name is clearly stated on the outside cover of your portfolio.

Three letters of recommendation (minimum of three) from individuals able to assess your potential for the successful completion of your education. (Former teachers and employers are acceptable) These letters may arrive before your other application materials. They should be mailed directly from the individual writing the letter, or you may wish to bundle them together. We unfortunately can not accept faxed or emailed letters of recommendation - all letters should be originals.

Transcript(s) of previous academic credit (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for department use). These must be provided by the applicant, the department is not able to retrieve transcripts electronically - even if you are currently a UO student.

Letters of acceptance or denial will be sent out on or around April 15.

Advanced Transfers:

Please follow the above procedure. Advanced placement will be based upon demonstrated ability and previous accomplishment; including academic and work experience. Students applying for advanced transfer standing will usually have completed at least two years of Landscape Architecture at another institution. If you have any previous baccalaureate degree, you must apply to our graduate studies program (Master of Landscape Architecture).
